Reliable, but maybe too many functions

By: on 20 May 2013
I've had this on my race bike for a month now and at a hard to beat price from Cyclingdeal. Firstly, it has not missed a beat and build quality is first rate. Sensor mounts nicely on chain stay to record cadence and speed. Computer mounts well on stem but also accommodates bar mount with a simple twist to remove from base. Sensor, cadence magnet and computer base attach firmly with supplied zip locks. Both unit and sensor run on supplied CR2032 flat batteries which are easily replaced. Instructions are clear and come via a supplied CD. The computer provides 6 readouts permanently, and includes the 7th readout of temperature when set on average speed or max altitude. I have found the readouts to be reliably accurate apart from altitude which is typical of many computers. As for my comment regarding too many functions, do you really need things like average gradient and trip cadence total? I doubt I'll ever know all the ways to access the available functions. The problem is that these superfluous readings cause an excess of button clicks to return to your common readouts. The front button requires 14 clicks to cycle through the available options. The left button does altitude, gradient and cadence trivia and requires a further 12 clicks to cycle its options. Perhaps the biggest design issue is the reset procedure. You can only reset your trip's collection of speed and time readouts in one hit while on trip time function, hence more clicking required to get back to TT(although I found a 4 click shortcut by going left button, then 3 clicks front button); it then resets via a lengthy hold of the lower right button which can be a real ergonomic challenge if you are negotiating anything but a smooth surface. Total odometer cannot be reset which is disappointing if, for example, you switch it to a new bike. Overall, I'm happy with the quality and accuracy of this unit which would suit the rider who wants a wealth of info and isn't perturbed by the number of button clicks required to access and reset it.

Set up very important.

As with the other review I was mainly interested in the cadence and climb percentage. When I initially installed the unit the speed only indicated to about 15 km/h. As the distance agreed with my other speedo I assumed that the unit may be faulty and decided to just wear it as the other speedo would cover it. I was going to keep my original as this, as most, wireless speedos goes to sleep if you stop for more than 5 minutes and I often forget to wake them up resulting in a reduced measured distance. Also with this unit when you wake it up using any button you end up on some other readout e.g. stopwatch. After some rides the distance was also starting to be in error and this does effect the climb percentage as it uses pressure change(height change)and distance to do the calculation. It turned out that the speed sensor was not picking up the magnet on the spokes due to misalignment. This is where the instructions are a bit vague. Going by other sensors I realigned the magnet to the end of the sensor arm and all is now well. As both the crank arm magnet and the spoke magnet need to be within 5 mm some fiddling is required and the sensor is large and easy to bump but overall it seems to work. With the climb percentage it needs a steady climb to give a reasonable readout and there is a fair bit of lag, short hills register after the event. As far as the 33 functions go I feel that life is too short to bother learning how to use them all.

The first thing you'll notice after pulling it out of the box is just how small it is It's 6.5cm long and about 4cm wide but very good

What a bargain!

It was with some fear and trepidation that I ordered the Bion Velometer online sight unseen and not a single review. I took the plunge and what a great decision. It arrived promptly from Cyclingdeal so although I'm only 30mins away from them and could have visited the store and saved the modest shipping cost I decided to order online to avoid the temptation of buying more stuff instore! Anyway, back to the computer. The first thing you'll notice after pulling it out of the box is just how small it is. About as long as my thumb. It's 6.5cm long and about 4cm wide but they say good things come in small packages and this is one of those good things. For the price it's amazing. I could easily pay 3 to 4 times as much for less than this gives you. Setting it up was straight forward despite the usual not great but usable instructions. It uses cable ties to hold everything in place but providing you nip them up nice and tight with some pointed end pliers nothing will move around. Tip, buy a pack of cable ties as they don't provide any spare ones and, if you're like me you'll need extras. I placed the mounting bracket on the stem but it is designed to go on the bars as well and the computer just clicks into place quite securely for easy removal. In all it has 33 functions. OK you probably don't need that many but so what. The cadence function is the big attraction for me followed by the hill percentage incline/decline which is very accurate being sensitive enough to show even 1% inclines/declines. It also has altitude and altitude gained and lost for bike one and two and much much more. Some people have said they have forgotten how to access some of the functions on their computer but really that's not a problem with this one because 2 of the 4 buttons access all the data while the other 2 mainly just do set and clear functions. The screen looks incredibly dark in the photo but it's not, it's normal for an led display and also has a backlight which only comes on for 5 seconds though. The display is divided up into 5 sections to provide 5 bits of information at any one time. Speed is always shown top right but the other bits of information change depending which button you push, main or bottom left. Only done 2 rides using it so far but very pleased. It looks good, all up is very light (uses the one neat lightweight fitting on the chainstay for speed and cadence) and is fantastic value for money. Sorry for the long ramble but as there were no other reviews thought it was worth it. Love to hear what others think.
