Bike frame sizes are defined by the length of the top tube, which is the bar between the seat tube and the handlebars. Using a height and inseam index is the primary way to determine what bike size you’ll need.

Mountain bikes and road bikes require different sizes, because you are positioned differently on them while you ride. Kids bikes are defined by the size of the wheels, which generally range from 12-24 inches.

Step 1: Height

Height is the first indication of the bike frame size you’ll need. Measure your height by standing straight against a wall with a book against the top of your head. Have a helper measure the distance from the bottom of the book to the floor.

Step 2: Inseam

Next is measuring your inseam, which can be measured by standing against a wall and placing a book up to your crotch. Measure from the top of the book down to the floor.

Step 3: Find Your Frame

Use the following chart to find the right size frame based on your height and inseam.

Ape Index (Reach)

If you are in between sizes for frames after measuring height and inseam, consider measuring reach.

Measure the span across your arms when you fully extend them outward, from the tip of one middle finger to the other. Subtract your height to get your ape index. You will need a slightly larger bike if your arm span is longer than your height, and a slightly smaller bike if your height is larger than your arm span.

Kids Bikes

Kids bikes are measured differently, using age and wheel size for guidance. Inseam is still important to keep in mind, as age is often just a guideline.

Women’s Bikes vs. Unisex Bikes

Women tend to have longer legs and shorter torsos than men, so female bikes generally have a shorter top tube, and it is usually slanted down toward the seat. Handlebars on women’s bikes are usually narrower as well, to accommodate for narrower shoulders. However, each person is different so a female-specific bike is not always necessary for women.

General Sizing Tips

Many issues with biking are related to size and adjustments. If you are uncomfortable on your bike for any reason, use these indicators to ensure you have the right frame size. If not, get a frame that fits your body best.

  • When you grip the handlebars, your hands should be shoulder width apart
  • Make sure you can comfortably reach the handlebars without scrunching up your back
  • When you place your feet on the ground, you should be resting on the balls of both feet. If the frame is the right size, you may be able to adjust the seat height

You can usually get an accurately sized frame by taking measurements at home. It can be beneficial to find the right size by trying out a couple of bikes and asking an expert.
