I recently took delivery of a spanking new Hasa F1 which I purchased from a shortlist of folders that included Brompton and Moulton. Foldable bikes, that are reputable, range in price from $1500 up to over $3000. So this makes the F1 something of a bargain. A six speed Brompton P6R retails for around $2100 and weighs in at 11.5 kilos. This is exactly the same weight as the Hasa F1 8 speed. Brompton uses a steel frame and rubber suspension while the Hasa uses a state-of-the-art aluminium frame with a beautifully designed rear section that carries the back wheel and derailleur. Although it does not use a triangulated rear frame, the bike suffers no flexing whatsoever when pushed to the limit through the gears. The entire bike is extremely rigid without the slightest hint of wallow and this taughtness encourages a spirited ride. The Brompton that I test rode was also very solid in the frame but if I had to choose a winner in the frame stakes, I’d say that the F1 has a sharper feel to it.

Both the Brompton and the F1 claim a maximum rider weight of 110 kilos though the Brompton opts for the smaller 16” wheels. The F1 uses the more common 20” rims giving a slightly smoother ride on bumpy roads and over cobblestones. I took the opportunity to change the original excellent Kenda tyres for a set of Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres which cost $200 fitted. The F1 handles the heavier puncture resistant Marathon Pluses with ease - the heavier tyres do not detrimentally affect F1s balance at all - and the Schwalbes are sure-footed when pushed hard around corners.

The build quality on the F1 is impressive. All of the frame’s many welds are finely rendered and clearly visible under the beautiful paintwork. Hasa has used a pearlescent white that has a true mother-of pearl quality to it reminiscent of a Ferrari paint job. The fittings are all brand name like Shimano and Weinmann and the attention to detail is of a very high order indeed. I can’t find one part of the frame or the bike that has been fudged. Even the side stand is a lovely piece of work that operates easily and is also made out of lightweight alumium.

Overall, the ride is firm and the handling is decisive. It turns, accelerates, brakes and cruises without any drama and when you do pull up to admire the view, you’ll find that curious onlookers gaze glances of admiration. The Hasa F1 has it all. It is a winner for commuting to school or to work and for weekend rides in and around the urban jungle. Well done Hasa.

Purchasing from you guys helps to keep the bikes on budget.
Your service is great and the products are good.

I would like to make one small recommendation - the front axle on the flip-flop wheelset should be 5/16" rather than 3/8".

Keep up the good work

Hi everybody, Have received two orders for jerseys, jacket, shorts and pants. The goods are great so thanks very much. What I have found with the shorts and the pants are their comfort and the padding is heaps better than comparable brands thus less saddle soreness and a more comfortable ride for an old fella like me who took up riding to keep fit and lose weight. The jacket and pants certainly keep out the cold on these cool mornings here in Adelaide and makes it worth whi8le getting up early for a ride. Once again thanks so much.

Dear Cyclingdeal,

I am writing to let you know how happy I am. And I am very lucky to find your shop while I was riding passing you. I bought the Specialized Bike which is with all cheap components, because I am a tall guy and I need 23” frame. I need to upgrade the components on my Specialized. I went to a lot of bicycle shops and they quoted me more than $2500. Finally I get those done at your shop for the price of $1235. And the bike was great and much lighter. I hit a car in the accident. Your stars Rim wheels are great and I was very surprised that the wheels are very strong and all the other components are still in perfect condition after that crash.

I will be your royal customer for sure. Now I have purchased a lot of items from you, including bicycle roof rack, bicycle floor stand, carbon bottle cages, bicycle pump and etc. Your shop is the first place I will go if I need something.

Best regards,

Raj

Stars Rim Full Carbon Wheelset review

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for being so friendly and providing great customer service.

I have recently purchased the full carbon clincher wheelset and could not be happier, they don't just look great, they also perform really well.

Thank You

Hello Cyclingdeal!

I started a little project to restore my ancient Shogun classic 10 speed into a single speed /fixie.
My intentions were to keep things on a budget, and i could have easily modified the standard wheels and hub to a fixie, but i
stumbled accross your deep V wheelsets.

It took me only a couple hours to modify my Shogun, but here it is!
Using your flip flop fixie/single V wheelset and half line chain, it has come out a treat, and is a pleasure to ride and im very happy with the outcome.

Thanks, hope to pick up more V wheelsets if i ever come accross unwanted frames!!!

I was wondering if you would like me to do another testimonial on the bike - I completed the first part of the 3 Peaks Challenge - 115 K with 2 peaks - photos attached. It was a TOUGH ride.

I appreciate you supporting me with the jersey however I was in the rain for all of the event and had to have a rain jacket on - sorry for that.

I have a couple of friend wanting bikes. I am encouraging them to go HASA.

I am also thinking of upgrading to a road bike R1 - any discounts if I do this or discounts for my friend if they buy HASA? Should I wait for your Ultegra 6700?

Have had my new team 5 bike now for 3 weeks and have tested it out on various trails and tracks. Just letting you know that it performs  well and also looks great, so all in all  I am very pleased with it.

Hi To Cycling deal

I would just like to thanks Russell your agent in Sydney regarding my new AC700 Hardtail purchase, placed the order Wednesday night for a race weekend at Lithgow on Sat/ Sun he kept me up to date with freight progress from Melbourne to Sydney and had a back up bike ready if the new one didn't arrive in time.

The only problem was that I ordered the 20" bike but Russell received the 18" bike, spec with a 100mm stem not 110mm as per the WEB sit which was 20mm shorter than the 20" bike that has a 120mm stem as per spec.

Even though Cycling deals had only 20" bike in stock as per the Web sit, the bike was about 40mm to short but with Russell's quick response to my needs he changed the stem from 100mm to 110mm and used riser bar from another model rotating them forward to give about another 20 - 30mm, these bar really should be on this type of bike as the flat bars look shit and have no adjustment options.

If I had of received this 18" size direct from Cycling deals I would have requested a complete refund but thanks to Russell from BikeFix we were able to over come most of the issues.

The bike was great in the MTBO racers on that weekend 20th/21st March had two flat tyres as the mavic 310s spec on the bike are way to light for any off road riding.

All in all I would give the bike a 8.5 out of 10, change the bars, tyres/tubes and seat and it would be 10/10 but that would take it over the 10kg mark not good for the sales and marketing departments???? but a much better bike.

Still a great bike for the money 5 *****

All The Best

PS I hope you use this in your Testimonials section on the web

Michael - 8 Feb 2010

I have started cycling about 18 mths ago and started off with a basic hybrid.  I have now upgraded to the HASA RX2 and it is a great bike, improving my riding abilities. I almost feel like a real cyclist and will make another upgrade in a year or so from the flat road bike to a full racing bike. I will definately look forward to seeing what HASA has on offer.

HASA and Cycling Deal provided a bike at a great price, I reckon $3-400 dollars cheaper than what I could get in local stores for a similar spec bike.

Cycling Deal service was great, they took the time to make sure I was happy with my selection and the delivery was fast. The bike arrived in Sydney without a hitch.

Brady Taylor - 18 Jan 2010

Well I shopped around for the best valued hardtail I could find and came up with the Hasa race 7.0D SLX, at least 20% cheaper than most big name brands.  I've had 12 months riding experience and it was time to graduate to a faster & lighter bike. I also went to clip in pedals for the first time. Well after the first ride I was impressed now after 6 rides the bike feels great in tight turns & rough down hill sections not to mention at 12.3kg it's a breaze to climb with. Nick has been nothing but honest when asking about the bike before purchase & when I mentioned clip ins for the first time He offered a great deal on his Xpedo pedals which are so light & real easy to use & adjust.

Big Brands out Hasa bikes in, I'll be looking to take advantage on value for money with my next purchase, I'm thinking Dual suspention!!!

Full final setup atop Mt Stromlo mid-December '09. Took me ages to walk it up there and throw all that dust

Brian - 4 Dec 2009

Hi Guys

Hope this helps..

I bought my HASA R2 in March 2009, the bike has been great, I have done nearly 4000klms including the 250klm Around the Bay with no issues whatsoever.

The build quality stands up to anything I have seen out there but at a fraction of the cost.

I have purchased a lot of riding gear and accesories from the guys at Cyclingdeal and they have always gone out of their way to help me.

See Attached, this is after I changed the bar tape to white, changed the tyres to Maxxis ReFuse and upgraded the seat.

Hi Cyclingdeal,

received the package yesterday and tested the bike this morning going to the office. The bike is really good and comfortable to ride.

It took me about 4 minutes less time to ride to work compared to my old bike.

Many Thanks,

Martin

Jean - 7 Sep 2009

Here it is in the flesh. I'm pretty happy. Done stuff all riding on it so far and learned quite a lot of what to look out for when buying a bike on the internet. Getting some clipless pedals ASAP, but otherwise it's now in full trim

Where bought and price

Cyclingdeal.com.au for $989.00, plus about $60 shipping from Melbourne to Canberra.

How it is used

Cross country riding around Canberra (Mt Stromlo etc) - an average of one ride a week to break up the otherwise roadie focused tempo (I suppose that makes me a MTB weekend warrior). It also does the occasional low speed spin around the local bike paths with the kids.

Disclaimer

I am a roadie (since the early ‘90s - my racing glory days) and this is my first MTB. I reckon I know my way around road bikes, but this is the first MTB I have ridden for any amount of time and the first I have ridden off road. I have no MTB experience to compare this bike against, so you might want to keep that in mind.

Description

The heart of this bike is a 7005 Aluminium hard tail frame. The frame is welded (of course) and has a CNC cut-out in the head tube with a carbon fibre sleeve insert in its place. This sleeve might shave a gram or two (though I doubt it), but has no practical use as far as I can see. It appears to be a glorified way to present the head badge, which seems a bit of overkill, but there is nothing really wrong with it I suppose.

The frame, despite its low cost, seems to have a competition heritage. There are no bosses for panniers and what not, and generally the way it handles suggests to me (a MTB noob remember) that it would not be out of place on a XC start line, though I'm not sure of its weight.

Otherwise the equipment highlights are:
- Rockshox Tora SL fork.
- Shimano SLX transmission (except for a Deore FD), the cassette and chain are Shimano too; the crankset is a Truvativ ‘fived'.
- Avid Juicy 3 hydraulic disc brakes.
- Mavic 317 Disc rims laced to Hasa branded hubs with black anodised SS spokes (28-spoke 2-cross at both ends)
- Continental Explorer 26" x 2.1" tyres
- Hasa branded aluminium bars, stem and seatpost.
- San Marco Ponza (made in Taiwan) saddle.
- Comes with Wellgo flat pedals which, according to someone I spoke to, are copies of the old Shimano XT pedals. They seem quite good for what they are, but I have replaced them with Shimano clipless MTB pedals.

It is available with 16", 18" and 20" frames.

Positives

This bike has a high standard of specifications for its price. There is not, as far as I could find, any other c.$1000 MTB available with a Tora fork and hydraulic brakes. You might find a model run out deal to match it, but I think you would be doing pretty well.

The frame is well finished with neat, sturdy looking welds and the quality of the paint job, though not flawless, is high. On the trails the bike handles well, going where you want it to go and it feels sure footed. The frame, though still fairly new of course, is well made and feels like it will stand the punishment well. The guy I ride with is a downhiller and even on his XC bike goes downwards pretty aggressively. Trying to keep up with him gives my bike a vigourous workout and there's been no problem, and I have no reason to expect one.

The mostly SLX drive train works well at all times and there are no complaints about that. Similarly the Avid Juicy 3 brakes pull you up nicely and offer pretty good modulation. There are, no doubt, better brake systems around, but these offer good bang for the buck.

The dealer offers a very good warranty: 5 years on the frame and 1-2 years on the parts.

Negatives

There are no real negatives, just a few quibbles:

- The Truvativ cranks are not very pretty, but do the job well enough for my needs. If I ever get MTB upgraditis (so far I only have the road strain) these will probably be the first thing to go.
- The stock seatpost was a 300mm job, which was too short for my needs. I bought a $17 replacement post from Velogear.com.au, which I have to say is an excellent basic post and maybe the best value piece of kit I have ever bought.
- The wheels are a bit of an unknown quantity. The Mavic rims are good (as you would expect) but the hubs are Taiwan generic, which could be good or bad in the long term. The wheels needed some tweaking when I got the bike (see below), but so far they are doing well and in all likelihood will last for ages. They are also cone and race bearing hubs, which I do not think is a negative, but for some people anything without cartridge bearings is a throwback to steam trains and whale oil lanterns - depends on your point of view.
- The QR seatpost clamp has been troublesome in that I have had difficulty adjusting it correctly to be releasable and also clamp properly. Maybe I just have not found the sweet spot yet, but in the meantime I have just cranked the bolt up and I am using it as a non-QR clamp.
- The stock saddle is a bit on the minimal side and may not suit everyone, though I have found it fine.
- You can have a white one, or a white one! The white's nice, but the black ones on the Hasa website look better I must say.

Additional notes

Buying a Hasa was a bit of a punt. It is not a known brand here and I did a fair amount of internet searching to try to find out more. There was not a lot of info, but the upshot of my searching was that Hasa is in fact a real bike company located in Taiwan. Their bikes are not uncommon in parts of Asia and, if the photos are to be believed, their MTBs at least are ridden in races there. There are some suggestions on the intertubes that they also make stuff for other well-known major bike makers (Doesn't everyone in Taiwan?).

To buy one in Australia requires you, as far as I know, to make an internet purchase from Cyclingdeal.com.au. This means you cannot try before you buy (though they are amenable to lay-by, and you can visit them if you are in Melbourne) and once you have it you need to get it road (trail?) worthy. The bike is advertised as 95 per cent assembled, and that is true, but that assembly is as it left the factory in Taiwan. You need to arrange the other 5 percent. Putting on the bars and stem is easy enough, but you also need to check everything is tight, tune the gears, set up the suspension and make sure the brakes work. In short do all the things a LBS does pre-delivery (or at least should do). I assembled it myself, but being a MTB noob I took it to my mechanic (who is not in a LBS) to check out. He found a few things that needed attention, mostly in the wheels where the hubs needed some grease, the cones were not as well adjusted as they should be, and where the rims needed a few tweaks in the truing stand. Depending on your skills you may need to factor in paying a mechanic to give it a good once over.

Internet buying also means you cannot modify the setup before delivery. As I said I have been up for a new seatpost and will probably go for a longer stem soon too.

I found Cyclingdeal good to deal with and responsive to my queries.

Recommendation

I would be lying if I said I was not a touch apprehensive about buying this bike, but now that I have it there was no reason to be. It is a good machine and excellent value for money. I am enjoying the XC riding I am doing on it and the general impression is that it is a well built bike which should last as long and perform as well as many more expensive and/or better known bikes. If you are new to MTB you could do a lot worse than buying one of these, and if you are an old hand on a budget I reckon you would probably be pretty happy too.

Postscript

I note that on Cyclingdeal.com.au this bike (the 2009 model) is presently (mid-December 2009) selling for $900 plus shipping. The 2010 model is now available for $990. The new model seems to be basically the same bike with a new paint job and a remote lock out for the fork.

DAVE Whyte - 21 Oct 2009

Dear Sir, I am writing to let you know how happy I am with my HASA F1. I am a bicycle enthusiast and have 6 bikes including road and mountain bikes. I have owned my HASA for about 6 months and purchased it specifically to take on a cycling tour from Vietnam to Cambodia (Which I have just returned from).

The F1 Performed brilliantly, I towed a " Bob Ibex" trailer fully loaded with luggage for two people and also fitted a handlebar bag and a seat bag- the bike was fully loaded! A total of 700km's was covered on roads ranging from smooth highways to rocky and dusty tracks. The F1 performed flawlessly and I am looking forward to planning my next tour on it.

If I could suggest one improvement to the design it would be to install a drink bottle mount on it- Otherwise the design is brilliant.

I have attached a few photos from my Trip.

Yours Sincerely

Dave Whyte Victoria
